The demands on legal translations

Due to the specific characteristics of legal jargon, legal translation holds an array of challenges in store for the translator. Despite its precision, this jargon manifests a high level of abstraction. It is characterised by phenomena such as frequent nominalisation as well as passive and gerundive constructions which are not common in everyday language. Furthermore, the translator has to take the differences between the legal systems of the source and target cultures into consideration. Lastly, mistakes in the translation of specialised law terms can lead to negative legal and/or financial consequences, for which the translator has to take responsibility.

What are some examples of legal documents?

– documents made by courts, such as indictments, orders imposing punishment, verdicts, rulings
– specialised texts in the legal field
– general terms and conditions of business
– terms of payment and delivery
– excerpts from commercial registers
– contracts
– insurance policies
– damage reports
– patents
